Champions League (The News- October 17, 2012)
The fourth edition ofthe Champions League T20 is underway in South Africa. Unfortunately, Pakistan — one-time World T20 winner and semi-finalist in all the other editions of the World T20 held so far — could not get representation in the previous three editions of the Champions League. However, this time around, the Sialkot Stallions, winner of the domestic T20 from Pakistan, got the chance to make an impact in their maiden Champions League T20. But then again the irony was that the Stallions were put in the qualifying round. Some other teams met the same fate including some finalist teams of the recently held World T20 Cup, namely Sri Lanka and West Indies.
On the other hand, it has been more of a free ride for selected nations. India’s four teams from the IPL are participating in the tournament. Similarly, Australia and South Africa have got representation in the tournament with two domestic teams. There should be solitary representation from nine to 10 countries in the tournament. If there is a need to include more than one team from a country, the extra teams should earn their place and the non-champion team(s) should prove their skills in the qualifying round.Amir Ikram
