The Patients' Dilemma (THE NATION- January 1, 2010)

The disastrous cases of Huma Wasim and Imanae Malik seriously exposed the casual way our doctors treat patients here in Pakistan. And these are just two of the few cases that came to the fore. The majority of such instances don't ever see the limelight of media for one reason or the other. I wish to mention the case of my own family, which became victim of such negligence when my younger sister died in the prime of her life because of an overdose of drugs. I fully second the cricket hero Wasim Akram's argument that doctors, more often than not, are unavailable, or are unconcerned to the point of leaving their patients at the mercy of the menial medical staff. One wonders why they act so irresponsibly when so much is at stake. While public hospitals become victims of bureaucracy, private hospitals fall to the malaise of commercialism.
